The Cinema

In 1930 Jean goes to Joinville to shoot "Chacun sa chance" ("You're on Your Own") directed by Rene PUJOL and co-produced by U.F.A. of France and Germany. This is his first major film and also the introduction to the screen of Jean GABIN. When the film is released, Jean is extremely disappointed by the way the looks on the screen. He will always keep this negative opinion of his film image, and he will never again agree to do another movie.
Gene KELLY made a special trip to Paris to convince him to accept a role in "An Americain in Paris" (Georges GUETARY actually played the part). Even offers from the BBC to film the story of his life could not make him change his mind. Jean is always fiercely independent and cannot easily agree to sign a long contract with a producer. He prefers to be free and to be able to satisfy his passion for travel. Also, Hollywood stars are very public, are at the mercy of the press and have little privacy.
La Compagnie Industrielle Commerciale Cinématographique wanted him to star in a film to be directed by Marcel CARNE. He would have had approval of both the screenplay and dialogue together with the director. World War II, however, thwarted those plans. He also refused "Cancan" and he was replaced by Louis JOURDAN.
The prestigious La Société Parisienne de Distribution Cinématographique, qui n'est pas des moindres (known for films such as "Les visiteurs du soir", "L'éternel retour" and "La Belle et la Bête"), will be no more successful in attempts to make a film "showing all the aspects of the talent of Jean SABLON".
There is one exception: "The Castles" with Ginger ROGERS and Fred ASTAIRE in which Jean's role is repeatedly reduced until only his voice is heard. In 1952's "Paris chante toujours" he appears with a number of other major artists.
