Jean est probably the first to understand the interest in new rhythmes in French song. As early 1931, he records "Que maravilla", "Un cocktail", and "J'aime les fleurs" with "Gaston LAPEYRONIE and his Jazz Orchestra" In 1933, Jean is nicknamed "Mr. Swing", and he appears on stage with his own trio (Alex SINIAVINE on piano, André EKYAN on clarinet and Django REINHARDT on guitar). He makes the revolutionary choice to have the orchestra play on stage with him and not in the pit. He also becomes the first French singer to really use jazz and to phrase his singing like a jazzman Throughout his long career he will be surrounded by famour jazz musicians: Stéphane GRAPPELLI, Hubert ROSTAING, Garland WILSON, Clément DOUCET, Casper READON, Barney KESSEL, Michel WARLOP, Maurice VANDER... |
